What is Gum Disease?
Periodontitis, generally known as gum disease, is a very common condition that most American adults experience at some point in their lives. It occurs in two stages: gum inflammation (gingivitis) and its advanced form, periodontitis. Gingivitis doesn’t always progress into periodontitis, especially with prompt diagnoses and dental care.
What Causes Gum Disease?
Gum disease is caused by the growth of bacterial plaque and tartar on the surfaces of your teeth and tooth roots. The bacteria released by plaque and tartar causes inflammation and irritation in the gum tissue around your teeth. Smoking, alcohol use, and other lifestyle factors can contribute to your risk of the development of gum disease.
When gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress into periodontitis. Periodontitis is a severe infection of the gums, tooth-supporting tissues, teeth, and eventually jawbones. At this stage, the teeth may loosen in the socket until extraction is necessary.
